Installing the Solaris 10 8/07 Operating System

The Solaris 10 8/07 Operating System install and boot process is based on the GNU GRUB loader. Therefore, the messages displayed throughout this process are unique to the GRUB loader and are different than in prior Solaris installations.

Identifying the Console

The next step in the installation process is to select the type of console for the hardware version on which the Solaris OS is being installed. Use the arrow keys to select the version of the Solaris OS that matches the hardware configuration. For most x86 systems, this is the default selection.

[Two serial console options are available in the event a headless rack-mounted system is in use and a serial port is needed as an interface to a serial console. For older x86 systems, such as the Sun Fire" LX50, Sun Fire" V60x, or Sun Fire" V65x servers, select Solaris Serial Console ttyb.]

Edit functions include using the arrow key to select or highlight an entry, the e key to edit a command, or the c key for a command line. Pressing the ENTER key, boot the version of operating system selected. The highlighted entry boots in 60 seconds even if a key is not pressed.

NOTE: Prompts do not appear during the boot process. If a selection is not made, the screen times out and the system automatically boots the Solaris OS.

Selecting the Type of Installation

After the ENTER key is pressed, or the counter times out, a series of dots will run on the screen, then six installation options are presented. Select an option using the arrow keys or space bar as appropriate, or let the counter time out to automatically select the default installation method:

System Configuration

A series of screens guide you through the Solaris OS configuration process.
NOTE: The graphical screens require a mouse to be rolled over the window in order to answer questions posed throughout the configuration process.

After you press ENTER, the system configuration process will start through a series of windows. Please roll the mouse over the appropriate window and make your selections.
Select a language for the system:
A new window, the Solaris Install Console, appears in the bottom-right corner. This window is used to display pertinent installation messages. Another window appears in which the Solaris OS installation questions should be answered:
The Welcome screen appears. Click Next to continue the installation process. Keep in mind the installation program checks the configuration entered. If the configuration information supplied is incorrect, the system will ask for the correct information to be re-entered on the appropriate screens:
The Network Connectivity window appears:

The Host Name window appears. Type in the name for the system and follow the guidelines on the screen, then click on the Next button:
The NFSv4 Domain Name window appears. Let the system use the default option and click on the Next button:
The Time Zone window appears. Next, set the time zone for the system. This example sets the time zone by specifying the geographic region. Select "Geographic" and click Next:
Next, select the continent and country. Detailed information on the exact location is requested. For example, selecting "Americas" results in a screen that lists all time zones in the "Americas". Select the appropriate time zone and click Next:
Next, set the date and time and click Next. A date and time is automatically displayed. If correct, click Next. If adjustments are needed, make corrections in the text boxes and click Next:
The Root Password window appears. Set the root password. Note the password typed remains invisible. Re-enter the password in the second box and click Next:
The Remote Services window appears. In this window, you can choose a "Secure by default" Solaris installation, but afterwards individual services should be enabled. If you are unsure of your type of installation, follow the default, "Yes" to enable all remote services:
The Confirmation window appears. Please verify that your information is correct and then click the Next button, if any information is incorrect, click the Back button and fix it:
The Solaris installation window appears. From here Solaris will start the installation process based on your preferences:
The Installer options window appears. This option only applies in case you want to do some post-install customizations, for this installation process let the system go with the default options. "Yes" on automatic reboot, and "Yes" on Ejection of the install media:

15a. A pop-up window will appear to remind you to physically remove the CD/DVD. Click on the OK button to continue:
The Media window will appear. Unless you are using different media than a CD/DVD, this question does not apply to your case, please use the default CD/DVD and click the Next button:
The System initialization window will appear with a progress bar, and after a few seconds it will disappear indicating that the system is was initialized:
The License window appears. Please read the Solaris License Agreement, and if you agree, click on the Accept checkbox, then click on the Next button:
The Type of Install window appears. Advanced users may want to customize the installation, if not, leave the default and click on the Next button:
The confirmation window appears. On this window, you can see a more technical description of how Solaris will be installed on your system. Click on the Install Now button:
The Install Progress window appears. Now just wait for a few minutes while Solaris installs on your system. After the installation is completed, remember to eject the CD/DVD. The system will reboot automatically and will start on Solaris:

IBM believes Linux is finally ready for the corporate desktop.

In an announcement this week at the Lotusphere 2008 conference in Orlando, IBM said that it will provide full support for Ubuntu Linux with Lotus Notes 8.5 and Lotus Symphony using its Open Collaboration Client software, which is based on open standards.

Antony Satyadas, chief competitive marketing officer for IBM Lotus, said the Ubuntu support for Notes and Symphony were a direct response to demand from customers. Lotus Notes 8.0.1 has limited support for Ubuntu Linux, but customers have asked for broader capabilities, he said.

Based on Slashdot comments from users, this isn’t such a great announcement. Some go as far as saying that it will be the death of Ubuntu. Canonical, on the other hand, has said that the availability of Notes and Symphony for use with Ubuntu will be a win for customers everywhere.

Although I’ve never used Lotus (and don’t plan to), apparently over 100,000 business users are interested in moving to Ubuntu Linux on the desktop. That number is a good chunk. If it helps to squash FUD, I’m all for it. Especially for Linux on the business desktop.

What do you think? Will this really be the Death of Ubuntu or will it definitely help solidify Linux/Ubuntu in the corporate world?

Preparation for GD

There are a lot of resources available on the internet. Always try googling around. You'll definitely find some useful tips. But the key here is practice. If you can form a group in the hostel, that's the best way to practice (that is how IITians prepare for the GDs - day and night they are doing mock GDs in their hostels) Pick up topics on current affairs, or you should be able to find a list of topics somewhere (either on the net or in one of the tutorial packages). As you practice, you'll realise your weak points which you can work on. The more time you spend practising, the better will be your results. Speaking aloud among friends would also boost your confidence. There are also some crash courses in places like Delhi, if possible take them. Most importantly, don't ever think that you are not going to make it. Your competitors are usually no better than you. If they get ahead of you, it is only because they have practised and prepared better.

Preparation for interview

Try googling around and prepare a list of questions relevant to you (this list may be long). Prepare an answer to each of these questions. There is a good chance that in the interview ... most of the questions will be from this list. But the preparation is not simple. You have to work thru your answers. For example, let's take a simple question like "What kind of books do you read?" Now you have to think of an intelligent answer which should lead further to an intelligent discussion. If you think you haven't read any worthwhile book so far, go ahead and read a good book. Prepare on questions like what you like about this book, what you don't like etc. Another tricky one is "the hobby question" ... you might have to do quite a lot of research on one topic which can call your hobby if you don't already have one. Again the key here is spending time on preparation. The more you prepare, the better your chances. Don't leave GDs and interviews to luck!

Branch/Technical stuff

Nobody will ask you hard core technical questions for an MBA interview. The branch will not matter. What they would want to know from you is why you want to do an MBA. They would want to know why you don't want to pursue a career in XXX engineering branch. You should have a good reason for these. You can't afford to goof up on such questions.

Good or Bad institute

I'm not aware of the current rankings of the MBA institutes. Try to compare institutes once you have got admission. You may also want to make a choice between joining an institute Vs taking up a job. The answer here will depend on the options available. But it is always a good idea to get something in hand before deciding to reject it.

Personal Interview Tips for MBA Entrance

These tips should be useful if you are going for a Personal Interview as part of MBA Entrance Process. Some of the tips could be useful even if you are going for a techinal/job interview.

0. Courtesy is necessary. Knock before entering. Wish the panel at the moment of first eye-contact as per time of day. A cordial smile while wishing is preferable.
1. Interview panel may consist of people from industry and/or faculty of institute you applied for.
2. Technical questions are asked in detail if you apply for MBA from IITs. In other cases technical questions are elementary. Even here, if you don’t know, just say that you do not recollect exactly. Do not take pressure and give answers you are not sure of.
3. Prepare personal questions thoroughly."Tell me about yourself" is a hot favorite. One must write down and remember each point in this question as it forms basis for other questions.
4. General Knowledge/Current affairs questions :They might ask you about current issues-Indo-Pak relations, India Shining Campaign etc.If you have researched and have a strong viewpoint,express it boldly. You will be able to defend it. But if you are not, give the pros and cons.This does not mean being non-committal, it is just to say that there is no single correct solution to Indo-Pak border issues. Panel can always cross-question.
5. They may ask why MBA after engineering. Each individual can defend this with special reference to her case.
6. If you are applying for college A and they ask you why not college B, talk about advantages of college A and NOT about disadvantages of college B.This is because once you start getting into nitty-gritties of college B, cross-questions may take you to totally irrelevant areas and the whole interview may go wild. The panel may take you into other areas.It is your duty to bring focus back to yourself, your preference in MBA and the institute you are interested in.
7. Like in GD it is necessary in interview to maintain eye-contact with each person on the panel. While giving answers to one person on panel, look at every member in turn so that they are not out of the discussion.
8. If while you are answering a question, a second member asks you a question, look/nod at the second member to acknowledge her question. Finish your answer and then start answering second question.
9. Preference in MBA streams (Marketing,Finance) may be asked. If you have read up on these fields, you can express your interests. If you are undecided - it is Ok to say so.Those engineers who are interested in Finance must have a basic idea about balance sheets and mutual funds,consumer banking etc.
10. Whether the interview goes fine or not, do not forget to thank the panel.
11.The panel may be bored of seeing similar people all day. Couch the same answers in different language so that they get the idea.

It's a very brief and quick list of points that one should take care of while preparing for GD/Personal Interview for entrance into a Management Institute in India

it seems simple but the MOST important point in GD is 'To Participate'. Try to jump into discussion as soon as possible. Sometime in the beginning of the GD they go around the table asking each person to share their thoughts about the topic. If that is the case, collect and organize your thoughts about the topic and present it in concise and clear way. Make sure to remain a part of the discussion throughout the GD. Bringing up new points that are overlooked by other member’s gives you advantage. Showing leadership, off course, gets extra points.

In personal interviews, they try to measure depth and width of your knowledge. They will most likely ask some technical questions i.e. related to your branch. They will just like to see whether your concepts about what you have studied are clear. They won't ask you a numerical or a formula but will give you some conceptual problem to solve. In case you think you resume indicates that "you are not good at technical" or your percentage is "low", you can try to justify that by mentioning other activities that you participated during your four years at college. You can highlight any accomplishments in extra curricular activites. Bottom-line is: try to improve but don't worry too much about your weak points and focus on your strong points.

The question of coaching is very subjective and relative to each candidate. The following really are very broad and general guidelines.

When it comes to preparation there are two separate things to talk about:
a) Written Exam
b) GD and Personal Interview(PI)

As almost everybody knows most of the institutes first conduct written test and only the people who qualify are invited for GD/PI. So first focus should be preparing for written test. Most aspirants use IMS Notes (and other books) for written test preparation and I believe that should be enough. You can explore about coaching institutes that provide regular (mostlyweekly basis) classes and see if you find any value in those. You might want to talk to people who are(have) already attending those coaching classes.

For GD/PI, I think it's always advantageous to go for a coaching institute. There are some tips and tricks that you DO need to learn from somebody who have already gone through this. Going through a couple of practice sessions of GD/PI does help too. For this, mostly coaching is in the form of crash courses. Once you qualify the written test, you have a few weeks before you appear for GD/PI.During these weeks you can attend these crash courses.

Make sure to do proper research to find how good the coaching institute is before you join it. If you happen to join a bad institute they might just confuse and sometime mislead you.

MBA Tips For Beginners

You should find this article useful if you are just starting to think about MBA - may be you are in third year or even second year. For people who already working towards MBA should find it useful as a checklist. Last tip would really be helpful if the question "Whether I am fit for IIMs?" is bothering you.

1. If you know only about IIMs, find out more about other good (and bad institutes). Do not just go by magazine rankings - seniors are a better source to judge an institute. Decide if you would like to go for a specialised course like advertising, rural management, or finance marketing etc.
2. Start reading an economic newspaper (like Economic Times, Business Standard).
3. If you are in final year and plan to go for CAT after you graduate, do give the CAT this year itself. Even if you are not prepared fully, it will give you a feel for next year when you will appear with full preparation.
4. Go through the 3000 Hi-Frequency words listed in the GRE prep book/IMS notes. Words meanings are a part of CAT test. It is a good idea to go through MBA Maths by RS Aggarwal. These type of Questions appear in CAT. And they are there in written tests of most companies you will sit for during campus. Dual advantage there.
5. If you already have some idea about CAT, it is now time to balance all three areas i.e. Maths, English (synonyms, antonyms, paragraphs to read and answer reading comprehension etc), Data Interpretation (graphs, pie-charts which require fast mathematical calculation) and Logical Reasoning. IIMs give interview calls only to those who have more than 90 percentile (not percentage) in ALL three areas. If you are good in english and bad in math’s practice maths. Go through "Vedic Maths" given in IMS and Career Launcher booklets. By heart (perfect) square roots till say 1024 and squares till 30 or 50. Learn ratios 100/1,100/2,100/3,......100/29,100/30. This will help in DI section.
6. Am I fit to go to the IIMs? - You have already proven that you are intelligent enough by reaching one of the 17 RECs in India. GD/PI can be managed with practice. If English is a problem, work on it. 50:50 is weightage for CAT score and GD/PI marks. But when you apply, make sure you apply not only to IIMs but also a few second rung institutes as a fall back option in case (due to unforeseen circumstances) you don’t make it to an IIM. Whether IIM or not, you can be working in the best companies if you try. Often people from XLRI, FMS, MDI, IIFT, SPJain, SCMHRD fare better than IIM counterparts.

TIPS

In Entrance Exam...
When in difficulty, if the value of the mutliple choices are not very close, use "short cut mental" calculations to arrive at approximate answers. The number closest to the approximate answer is likely to be the correct one.

When constraint of time, focus on ansering questions CORRECTLY rather than answering MORE questions.

In an interview...
a) be straight (don't bullshit if you don't know)
b) use plain and simple language (avoid jargons) and
c) be aware of current affairs (review of newspapers, current affairs magazines help).

Take all tests timed. i.e. even if you're doing one section of half hour say verbal. Time it and take it UNDISTURBED.

Analysis of the test is more important than the test taking itself. for example a 2 hour test taken should be analysed : All questions including those which have been attempted right. This would introduce one to more elegant solutions etc.

Maintain section wise data across tests on parameters like No. of questions, no. attempted, right, wrong and net score.

Analyse this trend to arrive at the areas or sections where one needs to spend available time in the most optimum manner.

Flash cards for Verbal (Dont know whether they are still part of CAT, but anyways...)

Guys who are diffident in quant need loads of practise so buy up GMAT/GRE stuff but reduce the time provided to a maximum of half of the time specified in those books.

Group interaction keeps oneself motivated hence keep the networking on : make sure they're serious guys too...

CAT requires a consistent preparation for about 4-5 months. Hardwork and sincerity is the key to success.

Make sure you get your fundamentals correct in the initial months.

Comprehensive tests should be taken regularly from October onwards. Prior to that don't take more than 2-3 comprehensive tests.

Analysis of any test is the most critical part. Typically a section test of 30 mins requires 1-1/2 hrs analysis and a comprehensive test of 2 hrs would need about 6-7 hrs of analysis.

No. of tests you give are not important. For example taking 15 comprehensive test with proper analysis would be a better strategy than going for 40 tests without doing proper analysis.

LAST MOMMENT TIPS

During the last week don't take any test. (seriously i mean it)

Make sure you watch atleast 2 movies in the last week.

Have a good sleep on saturday.(just prior to the d-day, i myself had slept for 10 hrs)

How to prepare for CAT

I think there are 2 parts to preparing for CAT. Let us assume that one has to take the exam in December of year 2. The first part is to
prepare and do the ground work for the more rigorous second part.

The first part of the preparation which includes improving reading speed, building ones vocabulary and increasing mental calculation speed one needs to start in say the June of year 1.

Reading speed could be increased by reading newspapers, good books on various subjects and not only fast reading but one should be able to comprehend what one reads.

Mental calculation can be increased by doing simple maths WITHOUT THE USE OF CALCULATOR. Getting rid of the calculator which becomes a habit in college is very important.

Vocabulary can be improved my seeing the meaning of difficult words while reading in a dictionary and then using these words.

Part 2

This is where u join a professional coaching and take practice tests. This can be started in June of year 2. Practice is the key to success and most importantly continuous practice. For instance if u take regular tests for a month and practice all four sections (Quanti, DI, Verbal and RC) and then do nothing for the next 15 days then all your practice goes down the drain.

So one needs to build the tempo and maintain it and be continuous in practice.

Ideally one should take practice tests for 2-3 months continuously which should culminate in the exam in December so that one is at his/her peak just before the exam.

Also it is very important to score qualifying marks in each section and so pay attention to each section during the exam and try and attempt say 20-25 questions in each section first and then go for the section in which u feel u can do better.
